Come November, my business, Aura, will celebrate 10 years in business!
I had a big plan of things I wanted to do to celebrate. I mean, how do you celebrate blood, sweat and tears?!
The first thing I did was write a list of what I wanted to achieve…
#Raise awareness of 10 years
#Talk about the real truth of running your own business, by yourself
#Celebrate by rewarding myself
#Set new professional goals
#Thank clients, suppliers and supporters
I immediately thought of a party. Invite everyone who has supported me over the years and say a public thank you. However, having already reserved a venue and started looking at food and drink, I then thought about the return on investment. Would people really appreciate it? Would it just be another party?
What I have decided to do is…
#Develop an anniversary logo
#Write and say thank you to people
#Develop a social campaign for the first week in November
#Develop valuable content for the people who read my blog and who receive my AuraTalk emails
#Invest in a reward for myself
Over the coming month, my plan will develop. However, there is one thing I have decided to do which is not only for professional development, but it’s to have fun and celebrate in style!
I’m so excited that I’ve booked to go to the GirlBoss Rally in November, which takes place in Brooklyn, New York!!
GirlBoss started as a book, by ultimate girl boss, Sophia Amoruso. She’s developed the book into a community and it’s known across the world. The community is all about learning and sharing and ultimately, empowering women to succeed in business.
When I weighed up the cost of an extravagant event, with attending the GirlBoss Rally, it wasn’t really a contest.
What I can learn from others at this event may well be life changing. I’ve always had a fire in my belly to keep on developing and being exciting, and I think I’ve managed to sustain this by modernising my practice over the years, evolving the Aura brand through design and content, but I think this Rally will give me a completely different perspective.
Who will I meet? What will I learn and be able to bring back to my business? I don’t know, but I’m damn sure I’ll be making the most of the unique opportunity.
I’ve already had Twitter engagement with Sophia. I can’t tell you how excited I am to meet her and of course, speakers like Arianna Huffington.
I didn’t want to go alone, as the experience should be shared. Mr. S did say he wanted to come to NYC, but to be honest, I think if someone else wanted this opportunity to attend the Rally, it’s better I travel with them.
So, I wondered who was just as ambitious as me, who would really value an experience like this and thought of my fellow PR lady, Anne-Marie, who runs Filament PR, based in Newcastle. She started her business over a year ago and I know she will truly get so much out of coming.
So, it’s booked! Anne-Marie hasn’t been to NYC before, so I’ve booked us a hotel midtown so we can easily access Brooklyn and we are around the central areas for visiting. We’ve got a couple of days for exploring, so on my list to show Anne-Marie are places all tourists should visit, but we’re lucky most of them are close to our hotel.
#Bryant Park (my friend Annika and I had such an amazing time there a couple of years ago, taking in the vibes and sipping mulled cider)
#Top of the Rock
#Grand Central Station
I’m also comfortable using the subway, so getting around should be easy. I’ve downloaded the NYC Subway app. I find the London one super handy, so rather than paper, this will be much easier.
While we are there, we both want to gather some great content for using, so I’ve invested in a selfie stick and I’ll be taking my bluetooth clicker and selfie light with me, too!
So, do you have any suggestions of cool places to eat and drink when we are there? Last time I was there, we managed to visit loads of great places like Little Owl and The Standard but I’d love to hear your recommendations. Leave a comment/link below with anything.
I’ve found some really instagrammable places for us, so be sure to keep an eye on my stories and posts. @laurafromaura and @aurapr_scotland.
Before NYC, I’ve got my husband’s 40th in Dubai! I’ve got some lovely things planned and amazing restaurants booked. Not to mention, we’re meeting up with friends who live there – we met them when they lived above our first rented flat! We’re also going out there with two our greatest friends, the guys from Guernsey. So much fun will be had, that’s guaranteed!
The last few months of 2018 are going to pass so quickly and before we know it, Christmas will be here! The most wonderful time of the year!
Thanks for stopping by and reading my post. If you could take a minute to share and tag any of your friends who might like it too, that would be great!
