Monty’s – not so new now

I visited Monty’s recently – I thought it was new but apparently it’s been open for months!

I’m usually in the know of what’s new on Glasgow’s restaurant scene but I was caught out!

I went for lunch with my husband because he’d been the night before with one of his friends and loved it.

Before it was Monty’s it was a wee sandwich shop – I have no idea how it managed to upgrade itself to this! Big, spacious, bright and airy with many original features such as cornicing and exposed brick. Monty’s definitely looked the part!

We were seated up on the mezzanine level so got a good view from above. I loved the interior although it’s not too dissimilar from its neighbours in the Finnieston area.

Monty's Glasgow - Laura Sutherland Scottish lifestyle bloggerThe menu was varied and all the dishes sounded very tasty but my husband had recommended the spicy prawns to start and I chose another starter as a main course, the chicken terrine, but they didn’t have any.

You know that way when you’ve made your mind up it’s really difficult to choose something else? That! I eventually choose the minced lamb.

I then got the lamb – I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it looked and tasted lovely! I had ordered a side of hand cut chips, but when the dish arrived I had skinny chips sitting on the side of my plate. It didn’t look the best to be honest and they weren’t hand cut. I pointed this out to the waitress and she took the plate away.

Monty's Glasgow - Laura Sutherland Scottish lifestyle blogger10 minutes later it came back with hand cut chips, on the side of the plate. I have no idea why someone thought chips belonged on the plate but it wasn’t presented well. I’d have much preferred a side order, as requested.

I also got a side salad, but I had cancelled the side salad when I had to change my choice from a terrine, so the kitchen obviously didn’t get the message.

Anyway, when I eventually ate the minced lamb in the wrap, it tasted amazing! There was a distinct flavour of cinnamon and other spices. The crunchy salad was really fresh and crisp so that was a nice texture to complement the wrap.

Our waitress was nice enough but I don’t think she was particularly on the ball.

If you have a look at the website it’s simple and has really useful information, such as, it’s dog friendly until 6pm, it’s family run, it has aircon and free wifi. You can also book via the website.

Monty's Glasgow - Laura Sutherland Scottish lifestyle bloggerYou can also book the mezzanine level for a private function for up to 30 people. It was a nice space for that and I imagine you’d have to have a set menu, but if the prawns and lamb were on it, I’d be happy with that!

The one thing which made a bit uncomfortable was the cold wind coming through from the bar area. Someone had left the door open and the autumn cold air was coming right up into the area we were at. I’m all for some fresh air, but…

All in all, I’m going to give it another go. Maybe go on a Friday night with one of my girl friends. I think it could be a great place for a lively night and it’s set a bit off the main ‘strip’ at Finnieston, so you don’t feel like you have to get involved with drunkards!


Food – 4/5 Hot, tasty and a nice choice on the menu

Service – 3.5/5 Our server was nice but we ended up being served by three different people which I don’t like. I like consistency. Also, I think the order was mixed up.

Atmosphere – 3.5/5 It was fairly busy but I will give a slightly lower score because of the cold air

Interiors – 4/5 I like the interiors but every new place is getting the same look

Value – 4/5 The prices are average

Overall – 4/5 I think it needs some good PR to help develop the brand, its personality and ultimately the business. Of course, I would say that! More profile would be good so it becomes a destination. Overall I think there could be improvements but it was a nice lunch.
