Every summer I take on an intern. Not to make tea and coffee, but to really understand what it’s like to work in public relations.

This year, not only will my intern be working on Aura clients, but they will be working on the world’s only PR festival, #PRFest and another new project which I’m currently developing.

PRFest 1 SA
#PRFest 2016 – the inaugural year

In the interview, which is more like a chat, I always ask what people want to learn. What’s their focus or which area of work do they need most insight into. Nearly always they say “everything”!

Key things I want interns to learn during their internship:

  • Working with clients – reading them, managing them and maintaining good relationships
  • Understanding what PR is, does and what value it adds to businesses
  • Talking through and discussing strategy
  • Tactical experience in developing content plans, writing media notices, understanding the approach to media
  • Knowing about timings – timing is key in all areas of our work
  • Learning about all the tools available to us to make our lives easier and our work better
  • Using everyday tools in their work
  • Reporting – it’s important interns understand they have to communicate with me! Frequently interns do tasks and don’t ask for input or assistance and don’t tell you when they are done!
  • Basic office etiquette – answering the phone, how to write and respond to emails, how to file online etc
  • Most importantly, how to have fun when working in PR!

If this sounds like you and you’ve either finished Uni or are going into your final year, then please feel free to get in touch!

Aura is a creative, fun and highly effective PR firm based in the west end of Glasgow, between Patrick and Hyndland, in a mews building. There are eight offices in the building so it’s a nice wee community of IT experts, designers, architectects and lawyers.
